It is risky to put yourself out there.
But it is also very lucrative if you do it right.
Kris Jenner, the mother of Kardashian girls Kim, Kourtney, Khloé and Jenner girls Kendall and Kylie taught this well to her kids. They leveraged social media to put themselves out there and created uber-successful personality-driven businesses.
They are doing great by any standards. Kylie Jenner is the youngest self-made billionaire at 21. Kim Kardashian is worth more than $300 million. Other girls are also not doing too bad.
They are not the only ones who have built their brands by showing up. All YouTube creators, authors, influencers, who you follow and see making big, chose to show up at some point.
Before you glow in the limelight and rake in the moolah, you need to fight fear and risk getting negative feedback or getting trolled.
Fear and risk are not the only things at play here. You also need to get ready. You need to learn, ramp up your skills, put on makeup, edit your words, and put the lights on before you show up.
The problem is that people rarely feel ready. There is no testing device that tells you that you are ready, except a friend, family member, well-wisher or a colleague telling you that you are in fact ready. And, when they tell you this, you need to trust them and their judgment which can be flawed.
Then what is the way out of this?
Here it is. Set some number that you feel is good enough to test yourself and get an outside party who is an expert or at least good at what you are attempting.
For example, if you are a public speaker looking to go big then tell yourself that after practicing your talk 6 times and after your speaking coach Rhea greenlights your talk, you will go out and deliver your first talk.
An author can tell herself that after she has done four rounds of edits with her chosen editor and the editor has okayed the final draft, she’ll send it out i.e. publish it. Same goes for a musician or a marketing professional.
Once you have passed this internal and external test, don’t wait to perfect your act further and be get going. Go out and share even if you don’t feel ready because putting yourself out there is part of getting ready.
Now is the best time to build a personality-driven business and to become a professional creator. Will you take this chance?
